Oscar Discussion: Do You Consider Lifetime Achievement When Rooting for Oscar Nominees?

Posted by Christopher Campbell on January 25, 2013

It’s hard to look at this year’s Oscar nominees for Best Actress and ignore the factor of lifetime career achievement. In the category we have an 85-year-old who has given us memorable performances for half a century. And we have a 9-year-old up for the award for her first role, which means she’s currently batting 1000. Of course, her youth and inexperience allows for skepticism regarding her future. How can a kid be nominated, many ask, when we don’t know if she’ll... More

Oscar Discussion: What Is Your Most Favorite and Your Least Favorite Oscar Category?

Posted by Christopher Campbell on January 18, 2013

Best Picture may be the top honor at the Academy Awards, but is it the best category? From the nominees excluding popular titles to the winner often being criticized as the safe choice, it’s undoubtedly the most contentious part of the Oscars. In spite of being voted on democratically by more than 6,000 people, there is always some sort of backlash from those movie fans outside of the Academy, especially now that the category includes more nominated titles. To make up for our usual... More

Oscar-Nominated 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' Coming Back to Theaters

Posted by Sean Oconnell on January 16, 2013

Of the nine films nominated for Best Picture this year, eight remain in theaters and are able to be seen by curious Academy Awards trackers who like to say they’ve watched every movie singled out for Best Pic. Only Benh Zeitlin’s spectacular Beasts of the Southern Wild – which launched at last year’s Sundance Film Festival – was out of theaters and harder to track down.  Fox Searchlight wisely wants to rectify that.    The studio announced that... More

2013 Golden Globe Winners Include 'Les Miserables,' 'Argo,' Ben Affleck and More

Posted by Erik Davis on January 13, 2013

The 2013 Golden Globe Awards are in the books, and all we want to know is whether Tina Fey and Amy Poehler can host every year. Can they? No, seriously, this needs to happen. Or if not, at least bring them back to star as those fake actors and actresses nominated for the most ridiculous-sounding movies and TV shows (hello, Dog President). But enough about the hosts – there were major awards handed out! The night’s top honors went to Les Miserables (Best Picture, Comedy/Musical)... More

'Zero Dark Thirty' Rides Oscar Bump to Box Office Win

Posted by Sean Oconnell on January 13, 2013

We talked in the Weekend Chatter column about the Oscar “bump,” which helps recently-nominated films at the box office. If you need another example, just look at Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty.    The military thriller opened in New York and Los Angeles at the end of 2012 to qualify for Oscar consideration – a move that helped earn the film five nominations including Best Picture. The movie finally expanded this weekend to most markets, and easily won... More
