Kathryn Bigelow's 'Zero Dark Thirty' Now Going Wide in January

Posted by Sean Oconnell on November 01, 2012

As the year closes out, films with Oscar dreams jockey for position around the release calendar … but there are only so many weekends, and far too many tantalizing titles hoping to play for audience members (and Academy members). Usually around this time, select feature shift their release dates to January while maintaining a limited December release, so as to still qualify for the Oscars this year.

That appears to be Sony’s plan for Kathryn Bigelow’s anticipated Zero Dark Thirty, which confirmed that its wide release will shift from the overcrowded Dec. 25 to Jan. 4, meaning most will have to wait until next year to see the feature.

Thirty will maintain its Dec. 19 limited opening in New York and L.A., meaning it’s still eligible for Oscar consideration. After opening in up to 10 markets on Jan. 4, Thirty reportedly plans to expand wide on Jan. 11.

Zero Dark Thirty, Bigelow’s follow-up to her Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker, follows the covert military mission to locate, capture and eventually kill Osama Bin Laden. The recent full trailer, which I’m pasting below, looks like the director brings much of the same gritty realism and war-torn tension to this upcoming picture. It looks amazing. So while it’s discouraging to hear that most of us will have to wait a few additional weeks to see Thirty, I have confidence that Bigelow’s talents behind the lens will make it worth the wait.
