Oscar Fashion - Hits and Misses

Leslie Gornstein
Viva Hollywood! This year has seen a decidedly mixed bag of red carpet fashion - until this past Sunday, when my favorite stars finally got it together and figured out how to arrive to an awards show in true style. The Oscars really delivered! Galliano, Schouler, Valentino - all of the heavyweight designers were there, by way of their much slimmer muses, of course. Were there fashion missteps? Of course. But not as many as I feared.
Take a look at my five favorites of the evening, as well as the five I thought could use a red-carpet makeover.
THE BEST:
Heidi Klum: Sure, only a model could pull off this dramatic Galliano with the serious Mrs. Robinson hairdo, but Heidi Klum just happens to be a model, so there.
Amy Adams: With the rest of the Oscar crowd drowning in a sea of red and black, Amy Adams looks as fresh as a forest in this structured Proenza Schouler. And the handbag!
Keri Russell: Soft gray? Pale pink? Just what color is this gown anyway? No matter. The simple shape paired with major neck ice makes this an instant classic combo.
Katherine Heigl: I would have preferred a more subtle lip that didn't compete with this stunning gown, but overall, a fine channeling of old-Hollywood glamour.
Jessica Alba: Unlike Anne Hathaway's overdone Marchesa gown, Jessica Alba's showcases her baby belly with the perfect mix of detail, color and cut.
THE WORST:
Diablo Cody: Between the animal prints, the massive earrings and the jewel-encrusted neck-thingy, this ensemble is just like Diablo Cody's writing style: Overdone.
Cate Blanchett: A berry large, confused mess.
Anne Hathaway: Between the bold color, the pleats, the drapes and the ruffles, this Marchesa tries way too hard. A shame. Anne is usually a dynamite red-carpet dresser.
Ellen Page: Bland much? Might as well wear a placard that reads, "Easily frightened by fashion. Do not approach while elegant."
Tilda Swinton: I had no idea that Death had a stylist.
